My Hoka Mach X – Intervals on Tuesday
Running shoe review: HOKA Mach X
Introduction:
In May 2024, I bought the HOKA Mach X and tested it intensively over the summer months on asphalt, in the stadium and on the treadmill. At 54 years old, weighing 75 kilos and in the habit of running 5 days a week, I used this shoe especially during my 14-week preparation for the Chicago Marathon 2024.
Here I share my experiences with this shoe to help you decide whether it could be the right choice for you.
Why the name „Mach X“?
The model name „Mach X“ emphasizes speed and efficiency. The combination of lightweight construction and cushioning makes it interesting for tempo runs and fast training.
Data and technical specifications:
Weight: approx. 235 grams (men’s shoe size US 9)
Drop: 5 mm, which supports rolling and promotes a natural running style
Area of use: ideal for fast training runs, tempo runs and competitions on asphalt or firm ground
Cushioning: designed for a mix of comfort and responsiveness
Materials:
Midsole: The HOKA Mach X uses an innovative dual-layer midsole. The upper layer consists of a PROFLY™ layered foam that supports soft landings and a responsive push-off phase. The rubber foam layer underneath increases stability and durability. This foam combines comfort and energy return – ideal for speed with good cushioning.
Outsole: The outsole is equipped with strategically placed rubber elements to extend the grip and life of the shoe without unnecessarily increasing the weight. It grips well on dry surfaces, but could lose some traction on wet terrain.
Upper material: The upper material is made of breathable engineered mesh that securely encloses the foot and at the same time allows good air circulation. The material structure is designed for durability and ensures a comfortable fit, even in warm temperatures or on longer runs.
Fit:
When it comes to fit, HOKA knows how to make runners‘ hearts beat faster. Anyone who knows the brand and has discovered it for themselves will also love the Mach X. Slip in and feel good – a phrase that absolutely applies to this model. The generous toe box with plenty of space at the top makes even long endurance runs seem comfortable, as the toes do not unnecessarily touch the material. The layers used are of high quality, so that you do not „get caught“ anywhere when wearing them. Poorly placed rubberized reinforcements in the toe area, which can be annoying with some shoes, are not an issue here.
If you look at the tongue, you will notice that it is comparatively thin, but padded in strategically important places. Nothing cuts in or presses, and at the same time weight is saved. The tongue is sewn to the side of the upper so it can’t slip to the side. I particularly like the grippy elastic laces. However, a small tab for storage would be ideal to avoid unnecessary dangling.
The heel counter is a sensitive area and crucial to the fit. This is where HOKA shows its best side: The counter is comfortable and well designed without being too high or abrasive. The padding and material speak for themselves – almost a bit bulky, which contrasts with the savings in other parts of the shoe. Nevertheless, the shoe fits rock solidly, with no slipping or uncomfortable friction.
Performance of the HOKA Mach X:
Introduction to performance:
HOKA itself describes the Mach X as a shoe for tempo runs, competitions and training sessions where speed and responsiveness are required. In my view, this is true in many ways – but not without a few caveats.
First impression and running feel:
The Mach X is a real racehorse in the shoe stable. It offers strong stability and dynamism, which pays off especially when running at a medium to high pace. However, I occasionally felt numb in the forefoot area on longer distances, which suggests that the shoe is probably designed for a larger foot strike. The Pebax plate seems to favor mid- and heel running, as the rolling behavior is more harmonious and the propulsion is softer and less hard. Midfoot runners will find a well-thought-out combination of stability and responsiveness that supports every step.
Stability and neutral shoe character:
What is particularly striking is the pronounced stability that the Mach X offers despite its designation as a neutral shoe. This additional stability is particularly pleasant for speed runs and provides a comfortable ride on asphalt or
